Your baby’s mattress will be one of the more important purchases you make when creating your nursery space and getting ready for the baby and it is incredibly important that your baby cot mattress meets the Australian Safety Standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.
The Australian Safety Standards are guidelines that are agreed upon by industry experts, all of which are designed to keep consumers safe and protected when purchasing baby nursery products. The standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 is the standard used in Australia that details and outlines the specific requirements for cot mattresses, including mattress firmness. When purchasing your baby cot mattress it is very important to note that it is compliant and meets these standards, if it does not meet these guidelines, it may not be a safe sleep surface for your little one.
This safety standard identifies the requirements for baby cot mattress firmness levels, material requirements and other key safety elements that are important in a safe sleep for your little one. If it is not stated or identified that the mattress options you are looking at do not adhere to the safety standards, it is not safe and not recommended for use.
When purchasing your cot and mattress, the size of the mattress is incredibly important in that it is the correct size with your cot. It’s important that your mattress thickness does not exceed 15cm/150mm as well as a mattress that lies perfectly flat in the cot, especially when placed in the centre of the cot, there shouldn’t be any uneven surfaces. When your mattress is placed in the centre of the cot, the gaps between the sides of the mattress and the cot rails should not exceed 20mm.
The materials used in your baby’s mattress are important for a variety of reasons, including safety, firmness and comfort. Across our entire baby cot mattress range, we are focused on using quality materials at every layer to ensure the mattress is as safe as it possibly can be for your sleeping little one.
In this instance we are focused on using quality pocket spring technology, in ensuring that the springs can work at a high level, and materials like bamboo fibre which is a gentle material, does not irritate and is thermo-regulating.
The Tasman Eco Premium Pocket Spring Mattress is another of our best-selling mattresses, and like the other pocket spring mattress uses a pocket spring base that uses the highest quality materials to create an excellent mattress that meets the Australian Standards.
The difference between our basic pocket spring mattress and the premium pocket spring mattress is the addition of an extra foam and latex layer, which adds an extra layer of comfort and the use of latex helps to keep the temperatures regulated that bit more.
The Premium Pocket Spring Mattress also features a removable mattress cover, made of bamboo fibre. This cover is completely safe for regular washes and makes life a whole lot easier for parents when cleaning up those unexpected messes or just a regular clean.

The Tasman Eco Baby Cot Pocket Spring Mattress is a one of our best-selling cot mattresses, that uses a pocket spring base and quality focused materials to create a comfortable and safe sleep surface for your little one.
Our pocket spring technology uses individual springs, each wrapped in cloth, where they each work individually to keep a firm, supportive and comfortable surface. It features layers of extra foam and felt to keep it comfortable but safe for your little one.
The mattress outer layer is quilted and uses a soft, breathable fabric that is comfortable and approved in-line with the Australian Standards.
Our pocket spring mattress is available in various sizes to fit various cot sizes, including compact cots and large cots, to cater to various options. Now, all of our mattresses come rolled in a box, and moving into this category means we’re able to manufacture more mattresses at a time, where we save not only on shipping costs and also on storage, we pass these savings directly onto the customer, meaning you can now purchase a better mattress at a better price.

When you purchase a cot in Australia it is common and a requirement from the manufacturer that you are given the recommended cot mattress size to match the cot. It is important that these measurements are followed.
The standard cot mattress size for mattresses in Australia typically measure at 1300 x 690mm, however, as we’ve mentioned, don’t take a guess on the mattress size and follow the manufacturers recommendation.
Travel cots (also known as portacots) are a great sleep space option for your little one when out of their usual sleep space, especially when travelling. They are slightly smaller than what your little one would be sleeping in at home.
There is no usual standard size for the travel cot, however, they usually sit somewhere at 1000 x 700mm. However, ensure you check the cot manufacturers recommendation for travel cot mattress size as they would have been tested with the Australian Standards for the most optimal safe sleep.
